Since I was 12 years old, I have designed, sewn and created apparel for myself and others. I can't not sew. It is such a big part of who I am.
Now as an adult, my aim is to reduce the amount of clothing and accessories I purchase from places that have little consideration for their workers. When purchasing ready to wear, there is no way to know how workers are treated. I make some of my bags from thrift store purchases and some from textiles that I design and have printed in the U. S. The company that prints my designs consumes no water and uses non-toxic inks in the printing process.
I have always been a big proponent of giving back. I spent several summers in Central America providing hearing aids and speech evaluations to individuals who did not have access to these services. In addition to hearing aids, our team provided educational and therapeutic activities to parents, teachers, nurses, and doctors. I am currently working with an organization that provides purses for girls on their menstrual periods in Africa. Without proper sanitary supplies and a place to keep them, girls generally miss school every month when they are having their cycle. This results in many girls not being able to pass exams that enable them to move to the next level of schooling.
